New Nutrition Facts Label Keep Current with Science
Now well over 20 years old, the ubiquitous USDA nutrition facts label is getting a facelift. The nips and tucks include more accurate portion sizes and an updated Daily Values for nutrients.
The coming changes are based on new research and scientific information and will take place by July 26, 2018.
Here are some of the changes to expect:
• Servings per Container and Serving Sizes will be in larger, bolder type and updated to reflect actual portions eaten.
• Calories are in larger, bolder type, since caloric intake has been deemed most important in healthy eating choices. A 2,000 calorie diet will still be used as a baseline for percentages and recommendations.
• Calories from Fat will no longer be listed as research has shown that the type of fat matters more than the amount.
• Daily value percentages have been updated to reflect current science.
• Added Sugars is now required as well as Vitamin D and potassium. Vitamins A and C have been removed, as deficiencies in these vitamins are rare today.
