Consumers revolt against chemicals

Consumer demand for HPP foods is growing — fast. By 2018, they’ll devour about $12 billion worth of clean label veggies, meats, beverages, ready-to-eat meals and wet salads annually.

So what’s driving this consumer movement?

For starters, consumers are more educated about additives than ever before. And they’re avoiding ones they perceive as unhealthy. Even flavor enhancers, like monosodium glutamate and artificial flavors, are getting the heave-ho from shopping baskets.

A rule of thumb: If your kids can’t pronounce the name of the additive, it might be eating your bottom line.

HPP: Fast, Fresh and Healthy

According to Packaged Facts, a division of MarketResearch.com, “The current trend toward clean labels presents a significant and fast-growing segment.”

Food marketers that can shorten their ingredient lists and substitute artificial ingredients with natural or recognizable ingredients will continue to take market share and increase market penetration.
